Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when stomach acid comes in contact with the wall of the esophagus, causing burning behind the sternum and acid regurgitation. The passage of acid from the stomach to the esophagus occurs physiologically throughout the day, especially after eating.

However, if these events exceed a certain threshold in terms of frequency and duration, true pathology occurs. It is a condition that affects about 10-20% of the population in Europe.

This condition is caused by several factors, such as dietary, anatomical, functional, hormonal, and pharmacological. The tone of the lower esophageal sphincter (passage area between esophagus and stomach) forms a pressure barrier against reflux and is the most important component of the anti-reflux mechanism.

When the pressure in the area is reduced, such as during the passage of water or food, acidic and non-acidic material rises from the stomach to the esophagus (even under normal conditions).

The most common symptoms of reflux are:

- Burning behind the sternum (so-called retrosternal heartburn) radiating posteriorly between the shoulder blades or neck to the ears

- Acid regurgitation (i.e., perception of bitter or acidic liquid in the mouth)
